A popular protein powder was recently recalled in 31 countries: what you need to know

You might want to pause before mixing up your next post-workout shake: Some tubs of Orgain protein powder have just been recalled, according to a statement released by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

On Oct. 4, Orgain LLC, which sells protein powders, shakes and bars across the United States, voluntarily recalled its chocolate fudge-flavored creamy protein powder because the tubs may contain an undeclared sesame allergen. The affected cans have been sold in 31 states, as well as in Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, according to the release.

The brand distributed potentially contaminated products to select Costco stores between September 8 and 28 of this year. These tubs were sold in 43.8 oz/2.64 lb white Orgain branded packaging and labeled Organic Protein Powder + Superfoods Creamy Chocolate Fudge. The affected products have the following lot numbers and expiration dates on the bottom of the tubs: (3212EL14; 7/31/2025), (3213EL14; 8/1/2025), (3214EL14; 8/2/2025) and (3228EL14); 8/16/2025).

According to the statement, the manufacturer Orgains accidentally used sesame to produce the protein powder without marking it on the package. Remember: Beginning January 1, 2023, the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act requires companies to list sesame as an ingredient on their labels after declaring the primary allergen.

So far, there have been no reports of illness related to the recall. To make sure it lasts, the company recommends checking your tubs and if you see any damaged cans, throw them in the trash or return them to Costco for a refund.

If you are allergic to sesame, accidental consumption can be a big problem. Symptoms can include hives, rash, tingling, itching or swelling in the mouth, abdominal cramps or wheezing. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening: it may lead to anaphylactic shock, which can cause loss of consciousness, hypotension or even death. According to the FDA, these food allergy symptoms usually appear within minutes to hours after eating the affected item. If you experience any of the above effects after consuming protein powder, see your doctor immediately.

According to the release, no stores other than Costco received the cans, and no other products were affected by Orgain. But if you picked up one from that brand on your last trip to that store, you’ll definitely want to double-check your product before your next chic combo.
