A personal trainer explained why women cried before their fitness classes started.
Jay Harris, a 30-year-old from central Liverpool, is a personal trainer who runs the Crew42 gym, located near Princes Dock. One of his classes, Fitness Bingo, came about when he worked as a physical education teacher at school.
The idea was for the day’s exercises to be completely random, keeping the classes fresh and fun. Speaking to the ECHO, Jay said: “I thought, I’m going to do something different, I’m going to invent a game that kids will like. That’s when I created Fitness Bingo.

“It’s unbelievable. I didn’t expect the kids to like it so much. When lockdown happened, I put it online.
“Every day I gave out free training. It’s been a few years in the making.”
Jay now manages it personally, specifically for menopausal women. He was led into teaching in-person adult classes after his friend, actress and wellness coach Lindzi Germain, came up to him a little upset at the gym two years ago after struggling with her self-esteem.
Jay said the group’s beginnings were anything but simple, arguing that fitness classes can be intimidating and lack ways to make exercise fun and positive.
Speaking to the ECHO, Jay said: “In the first session some of them were crying before it started. Now they are regulars, bringing their daughters and friends.”
He added: “I think what keeps people coming back is that they are best friends. We are doing this as one big family. We have young people aged 18 to 65 coming in.”
Explaining what makes Fitness Bingo different, he said: “The beauty of the class is that I let them continue in their home. We laugh, we play games, we put on cheesy music.”
He added: “They arrive, they don’t know what exercise they are going to do. We also give away prizes, from pajamas to alcoholic drinks. It’s a big laugh, the whole hour is a big laugh.”
Jay’s work was recognized last September when Fitness Bingo was awarded Best Fitness Event at the British Fitness Awards. However, the victory was unexpected.
Jay said: “I didn’t expect to win because some of the other nominees were huge companies. It’s a blur, I don’t even remember going on stage.”
Amidst a busy schedule of classes and running his business, Jay says Fitness Bingo is the highlight of his week. He said, “I’m exhausted Wednesday night before class. When they arrive, I feel on top of the world. It’s just great.”
In the future, Jay intends to build on his recent success. He said: “Winning the award was unbelievable. I never thought this would happen, but I want to enjoy the moment and move forward.”
